California’s new law broadens which out-of-state sellers must register with the California Board of Equalization and collect California sales tax. Under the law, a retailer that enters into an agreement with a California entity that refers potential purchasers to the retailer - whether online or otherwise - must collect the state sales tax, provided they meet certain revenue specifications.
The California Board of Equalization announced that it will hire approximately 100 new state auditors, lawyers and specialists to help collect online sales tax over the next three years, reports Bloomberg Businessweek. According to this report, California estimates that more than 2,000 out-of-state online retailers may have to collect state taxes under the new online sales tax law.
