WordPress Plugins are little programs that help you do things that used to require hours of expensive coders’ time to make happen.
One of my favorite ones is called URL Redirect. Sometimes, for any number of reasons, you want to change the URL of a page or a post. One really good reason for this, is that you figured out a better way to optimize the page for SEO by rearranging the title, so now you want to update the URL as well. The problem is, people may have the original URL bookmarked, and if you simply update that URL, then they will get a 404 error.
URL Redirect is a WordPress Plugin that solves this problem.
You simply put in the old URL, and then update the post or page. Then you drop in the new URL. This way when someone clicks on their bookmark to the old URL, they are re-directed to the new one. Most people will not even notice they are being redirected.
My next favorite WordPress plugin is Yoast SEO. I don’t know a whole lot about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and I don’t know much about how to write a post that is optimized for the best possible SEO results.
Yoast SEO has improved my writing skills, and my knowledge of SEO
Google has one main job to do. Deliver you the most relevant possible search results. If I searched Google for, “how to improve SEO” and I got results for “Southern England Orchards” I would be pretty disappointed. When you start to look at SEO from this perspective, it starts to make a lot of sense. It’s not about trying to game the system. It’s about trying to let Google know which topics you are an authority on. For that matter, it’s about letting Google know which topic(s) a particular page or post is an authority on.
Google takes into account that people are moving lightning fast on the internet. This brings our average reading comprehension down to the level of an elementary school kid. Not because we’re not smart, but because we’re not real focused. When we search the internet, we want, what we want, and we want it fast,
The above has an impact on how our writing needs to be organized. There is a reading score known as the Flesch Reading Score. The Flesch Reading Score is used by the Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin to analyze your writing. The higher the score, the easier it is to read.
What is happening when you are writing your content in a manner that makes it easy to read, then you are making it really easy to understand what your topic and message is. This is where your focus key phrase comes in. Instead of using words like “this” or “that” I replace them with my focus key phrase, like “WordPress Plugin.”
The way to keep your writing on an easy reading comprehension level, is to keep reminding the reader of what it is, that you’re talking about. The other thing I’ve learned, by using the Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin (- see what I did there?) is that you want to keep your sentences short. Often times a sentence can be broken into two sentences, or altogether re-written.
If you can think of something that you need WordPress to do, chances are there is a plugin out there, that will make it happen. I have often done Google searches and found plugins that solved a particular problem.
That’s Helping you accomplish tasks for all kinds of things you want to do on your website is what WordPress Plugins are for!
